Should I be making a ‘Facilities video’?
Whether you’ve just had a fresh intake of students in January, you’re looking to check-in with those who arrived in September or you’re focusing on any last efforts to convert those prospective students into solid applications later down the line, then perhaps a short video that showcases your departmental facilities could be a worthwhile investment to consider…especially during this period of the year.
"You’ve invested millions in your facilities, it’d be crazy not to show them off!”
But we already have a ‘Campus video’, isn’t that the same thing?
This depends of course on the length and scope of your existing virtual campus tour. A video which specifically explores the breadth of your facilities can be anything between a series of 30 second social cuts to a more comprehensive 5 minute journey. But fundamentally, it’s a dedicated space to spotlight departmental equipment that the respective internal team will be proud to share (and probably will have worked hard to achieve the budgeting allowance for), so here’s the chance to shout about it…
…and by doing so you’re only benefitting students. A facilities video can be not only informative, but inspirational. For a prospective student, it means the chance to visualise the access opportunities that they will have if they decide to come to your institution.
"For a current student, this might be a needed invitation to really discover and make use of what is actually already available to them, an experience that undoubtedly influences metrics such as student satisfaction and engagement in studies. ”
Campus tour videos provide the chance to translate the essence of a vast location, but when it comes to departmental queries, a prospective medical student for example, might be dying to discover that you have a state-of-the-art light microscope hidden in the labs. A future drama student will be anxious to envisage themselves in the various performance spaces that the department boasts.
This is the opportunity to facilitate their chance to envisage what their academic and social experiences could become at your institution.
